seed-potato-carolus
Seed Potato Carolus

Carolus is a modern early maincrop bred for gardeners who want a dependable harvest without the worry of blight. Developed in the Netherlands and introduced in 2012, it draws its natural resistance to late blight in both foliage and tubers from a wild South American relative, and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its generous crops. It produces quite large, oval tubers with smooth yellow skins and attractive red eyes, and yellow flesh with a slightly floury texture. A true all-rounder in the kitchen, it’s excellent baked, roasted, mashed, boiled or made into chips. The variety is named after Carolus Clusius, the 16th-century botanist who helped introduce the potato to Europe.

With strong blight resistance and good drought tolerance, Carolus is an ideal choice for organic and low-input growing, and a reliable performer in both wet and dry summers. It also stores well once lifted. Chit your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost-free spot for around six weeks, then plant out from late March to mid-April, around 10cm deep and 40cm apart. Earth up once the plants reach about 20cm tall so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well during dry spells, and your crop should be ready to lift from late summer into early autumn. Store in a cool, dark, dry place.

Each pack is checked before dispatch.
