seed-potato-cara
Seed Potato Cara

Cara is a dependable Irish maincrop, bred at Oak Park in County Carlow and released in 1976. It went on to become one of the most widely grown maincrop potatoes in Britain and Ireland, thanks to its heavy yields and excellent disease resistance. It produces handsome, round to oval tubers with smooth white skins attractively splashed with pink around the shallow eyes, and creamy-white flesh with a soft, floury texture. A brilliant baking potato, it’s also excellent roasted, mashed or made into chips.

Cara’s real strength is its good resistance to blight and drought, so it’s a reliable choice in both wet and dry summers and well suited to low-input and organic growing. It thrives on lighter, well-drained soils and stores very well once lifted. Chitting is optional for maincrops, but it helps give a strong start. Plant out from late March in milder areas to mid-April, around 10cm deep and 40cm apart. Earth up as the shoots develop so the tubers stay covered, as potatoes exposed to light turn green and shouldn’t be eaten. Water well during dry spells, then lift your crop in September and October, around 20 to 22 weeks after planting. Store in a cool, dark, dry place for homegrown potatoes through the winter.

Each pack is checked before dispatch.
