It is said to descend from a tree planted for King James I at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London, and it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. In late summer it produces generous crops of large, glossy, dark red to almost black berries with a rich, sweet-tart flavour. They're superb eaten straight from the tree, and wonderful in jams, fools, crumbles, sorbets and summer puddings. The juice stains, so pick with care and avoid planting over a patio or path. Better still, Chelsea is self-fertile and begins cropping from a young age, so you won't have to wait decades for your first harvest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eChelsea is as ornamental as it is productive. Its large, heart-shaped leaves turn butter-yellow in autumn, and with age it develops a characterful spreading crown of crooked, gnarled branches. It is slow-growing and long-lived, eventually forming a medium-sized tree of 8–12m over many decades, so it makes a wonderful heritage specimen for a lawn or larger garden. Plant in full sun in a spot sheltered from cold, drying winds, in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Handle the roots gently at planting time, as they are brittle. Prune only in late autumn or early winter while the tree is fully dormant, as mulberries bleed sap if cut in spring or summer.
