helleborus-viv-elena-4ltr
Helleborus viv 'Elena' 4Ltr

Helleborus ViV® Elena brings colour to the garden when it’s needed most. It’s one of the earliest-flowering hellebores in the ViV® series, often starting in November and carrying on through winter, with flowers sometimes lasting until April. The double blooms are a rich pinkish-red with a bright boss of yellow stamens at the centre. They sit well above the foliage, so they’re easy to enjoy without bending down to lift each flower. Cold weather actually deepens the red, so the hardest frosts bring out its best colour. The flowers also hold their colour well as they age, which keeps the display going long after the first blooms have opened.

Elena forms a compact clump about 35–45cm high and 30cm wide, so it fits easily at the front of a border, in a woodland planting or under deciduous shrubs. ViV® hellebores were selected for growing in containers as well as in the ground, and Elena makes a superb winter pot for a doorstep or patio. Pair it with winter-flowering shrubs such as Mahonia, or other hellebores, to stretch the season further.

Plant in partial or light shade, in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil that is neutral to alkaline, in a spot sheltered from cold, drying winds. A few older leaves may brown in autumn as the buds develop. Cut these away at the base to tidy the plant and show off the flowers. In pots, water at least once a week during dry spells, even in winter. Elena is fully hardy, and rabbits and deer usually leave it alone. Like all hellebores, every part of the plant is harmful if eaten and the sap can irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling it and plant it away from inquisitive pets and children.

Supplied in a 4 litre pot.

Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.

Available from Pengelly Garden Centre.
