It was raised in the 1990s by amateur fruit breeder Hector Harrison and named after his daughter, Stella, and it is sometimes known as Hector's Greengage. It is easier to grow than many traditional gages and crops generously from an early age. White spring blossom, popular with bees, is followed in mid-August by plentiful small, olive-green fruits that ripen to pale yellow, with sweet, juicy flesh and a gentle gage flavour. Enjoy them fresh from the tree, or cook them into pies, crumbles and jams.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eStella's Star is self-fertile, so a single tree will crop on its own. It is also a good pollination partner for other plums and gages, including Old Greengage and Cambridge Gage. It forms a compact, well-branched tree that flowers and fruits freely, making it a great choice for smaller gardens. Plant in full sun in a spot sheltered from cold, drying winds, in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring, water well during dry spells while the tree establishes, and thin the fruit in heavy years for better size and flavour. Prune lightly in summer to keep an open shape and reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Fully hardy.
