Given age, it forms either a broad, tent-like crown or a more upright silhouette with steeply cascading limbs, no two specimens ever growing quite alike. The glossy, elliptic mid-green leaves turn a rich golden-brown in autumn. This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eInconspicuous flower catkins appear in spring, followed by typical bristly beech fruits in autumn. The smooth grey bark and undulating branch structure provide striking winter interest once the leaves have fallen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eTolerant of a wide range of soils including chalk, clay, loam and sand, it thrives in full sun or partial shade, and grows best where it won't be exposed to pollution such as road salt.
