Its coarse, gritty texture opens up compost and soil so water drains freely and air reaches the roots.

Part of Deco-Pak’s Chelsea Horticultural range, it’s made for smaller jobs where a little goes a long way. Mix it into compost for alpines, succulents, cacti, herbs and Mediterranean plants that hate sitting wet, or use it to make a free-draining mix for rooting cuttings and sowing seeds. A fine layer over sown seed helps keep the surface from capping, and a handful in the bottom of the planting hole gives bulbs a drier base and helps prevent rotting in heavier soils. It’s also handy for top dressing small areas of lawn. The handy pouch is easy to store and pour, and the packaging is made from 50% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Available from Pengelly Garden Centre.
