Bred at the Summerland research station in Canada, this award-winning variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is self-fertile, so a single tree will give a heavy crop on its own. Its large, glossy, dark red cherries are firm and sweet with a refreshing hint of tang. They ripen gradually over about two weeks rather than all at once, so you can keep picking fresh fruit for longer. Its white blossom opens late, from April into May, which helps it avoid spring frosts and makes it popular with bees. Sweetheart is also an excellent pollinator for other cherries, and a good match for late-flowering, self-sterile varieties such as Penny.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eGrown on Colt rootstock, Sweetheart makes a vigorous, upright tree of around 3.5–4m, which annual pruning keeps smaller. It is well suited to fan-training against a warm, sunny wall, which also makes netting against birds easy. Plant in full sun in a sheltered spot away from frost pockets, in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and stake firmly while the tree establishes. Sweetheart can set more fruit than it can support, so prune in summer after harvest to keep a balance of new and older wood, and thin heavy clusters if needed. Summer pruning also reduces the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker. Fully hardy (RHS H6).
