It gives regular, generous crops of glossy dark red sour cherries from late July into August. Pick them as they turn dark red for jams, pies, crumbles, bottling and cherry brandy, or leave them until almost black for a mellower fruit that can be eaten fresh. Morello is self-fertile, so a single tree crops on its own, and its white spring blossom is attractive and popular with bees. It also flowers late, which helps it escape spring frosts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eMorello is one of the few fruit trees that crops well on a shady north-facing wall, although it is equally happy against a south or west-facing wall or grown as a freestanding tree. Grown on Colt rootstock, it makes a manageable tree of around 4m, and fan-training keeps it compact and easy to net against birds. Plant in a sheltered spot in moist but well-drained soil. Unlike sweet cherries, Morello fruits on the previous year's growth. Each summer after harvest, cut back some of the shoots that have fruited to encourage fresh new wood for next year's crop. Fully hardy (RHS H6).
