Grafted onto the semi-vigorous MM106 rootstock, it makes a robust, well-anchored tree reaching around 4m in height and spread, suited to larger gardens, orchards, or anywhere a traditional, long-lived apple tree is wanted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAttractive pink and white blossom appears in May, followed by medium-sized fruit with yellow skin flushed and striped red, and cream, richly flavoured flesh. Harvest from November, with good storage keeping the apples in excellent condition right through to March.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e'Gala' is not self-fertile, so you'll need a pollination partner flowering in the same period (Group 4), or from an adjacent group (3 or 5), to guarantee a good crop. MM106 tolerates a wide range of soils, including those prone to some dryness, and produces a sturdy tree that generally doesn't need permanent staking once established, though it does take a little longer to come into fruit than more dwarfing rootstocks — usually 4–5 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003ePlant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil, and prune each winter to maintain an open, productive shape.
