It was introduced in 1893 and has remained a favourite ever since. The red-flushed green apples are juicy and tangy and can be used for eating or cooking. They are best enjoyed within a few weeks of picking.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eCox's Self Fertile finishes the season. It is a self-fertile form of Cox's Orange Pippin, which many regard as the finest-flavoured English apple, with creamy, aromatic flesh and a rich, complex sweetness. The fruit is picked in October and, stored somewhere cool, keeps until January.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThis bush tree has a short trunk and an open, branching crown. It is grafted onto the semi-vigorous MM106 rootstock and typically reaches 3–4m tall and wide at maturity, though regular winter pruning keeps it smaller. It suits a medium-sized garden where there's room for only one apple tree. Plant in full sun in well-drained, reasonably fertile soil. Stake the tree securely for the first few years while the roots establish, and water well during dry spells in the first couple of summers. Each variety grows at a slightly different rate, so keep the tree balanced by pruning the most vigorous branches a little harder each winter. This stops one variety crowding out the others. Keep the variety labels on each branch so you can tell them apart.
