This tree has been trained to a single stem with short fruiting side-shoots, so it can be grown flat against a warm, sunny wall or fence, where it gets the heat it needs to ripen its fruit fully. It is grafted onto the dwarfing M9 rootstock and is usually kept to around 1.8–2m tall. Trees can be planted as close as 75cm apart, so several varieties fit along a single boundary. Braeburn is a spur-bearer, carrying its fruit on short side-shoots, which makes it naturally suited to cordon training. Summer prune from late July, cutting new side-shoots back to encourage fruiting spurs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003ePlant in deep, fertile, well-drained soil in the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have, avoiding very acid or shallow chalky ground. Keep the tree permanently supported, as M9 has a shallow root system, and water well during dry spells. Braeburn tends to fruit young and heavily. Thinning the fruitlets in early summer improves the size and quality of the apples.
