Pick the fruit from late October and store it somewhere cool, and it will keep well into the new year, often lasting through to March, long after most homegrown apples are gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThis bush tree has a short trunk and an open, spreading crown. It is grafted onto the semi-dwarfing M26 rootstock and typically reaches around 2.5–3m tall at maturity, making it well suited to an average-sized garden. Braeburn crops best with plenty of warmth, so give it the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have, ideally against a south-facing wall or fence. Plant it in deep, fertile, well-drained soil, avoiding very acid or shallow chalky ground. Allow around 2.5–3m between trees. M26 is less firmly anchored than more vigorous rootstocks, so stake the tree securely and keep the stake in place on exposed sites. Braeburn tends to fruit young and heavily, and thinning the fruitlets in early summer will improve the size and quality of the apples.
